Sherlock Shepherd prides himself on beng a good promoter, but he wants to be regarded as a successful producer of deserving talent. That’s why he decided to spearhead the first annual Guyana Artistic Music Awards (GAMA) of Canada.
Organised through the Guyanese Canadian Artistic Inc., the event is focused on promoting and recognising Guyanese talent and supporting cultural development by Guyanese Internationally. The showcase is also intended to pay homage to cultural icons by exposing their diverse talent within the entertainment industry.
Working alongside Sherlock - having founded the community organization with him are Randolph Waterman of “Randolph’s Building and Renovation Company”, Elton Joseph of “Nortel Upholstery” and Andrew Francis of “Ark Plumbing Inc.”
Popularly known as “Professor” because of his exceptional ability as a professional cosmetologist operating out of his twin businesses “Celebrity Touch Hair Studio” and Celebrity Roots & Culture Supplies at Eglington West and Marlee Avenues in Toronto, Sherlock is a pioneer and a visionary.
While attending the Topaz School of Cosmetology in Canada, he was the first student to win a scholarship to the National Beauty Culturist League in the USA, where in 1998 he obtained his Bachelor,s Degree in Cosmetology.
This enterprising husband and father is the founder of Top Youth Promotion, the Massive Bunch Entertainment in Georgetown, Guyana and President of the National Beauty Culturist League.
Sherlock copped the “Top Student” Award at the GR8 Hair Awards Ceremony and Educational Trade Show held in November 1998 at the Triumph Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel.
In his native Guyana, Sherlock attended St. Pius Primary School , Dolphin Community High School and Critchlow Labour College, where he won several awards. When he was seventeen years old, he began to work at the University of Guyana, then moved to the Ministry of Finance.
These jobs did not deter him from his “street hustle”, promoting parties and hair and fashion shows throughout Guyana. His style of dress and street credibility earned the nickname “Punk Sherlock”.
Over the years he has proven his staying power and his dream to succeed. The staging of the Guyana Artistic Music Awards is tangible testimony to the quality of his vision and the ability to get it done.
